THE WEBSITE
OF THE ARCHDIOCESE OF PRZEMYŚL

The website is the official website of the Archdiocese of Przemyśl preparing the beatification ceremony of Józef and Wiktoria Ulma together with their seven children.

The beatification of the Ulma family is an unprecedented event, because with one act of beatification, the whole family will be raised to the glory of the altars – parents Józef and Wiktoria Ulma together with their seven children. An additional unprecedented fact is that this act will also beatify the unborn child who was in the mother’s womb at the time of death. The beatification ceremony will take place on September 10 at 10:00 in Markowa, Poland – the place where Józef and Wiktoria Ulma lived and where they were murdered. They were martyred because they were brave enough to take eight people of Jewish nationality under their roof, having earlier helped other Jews who were persecuted only because they were of such and no other nationality.

Help the Many People
in Need

Józef and Wiktoria Ulma were born and lived in Markowa in the Archdiocese of Przemyśl. They grew up in religious families. They built their marriage and family life on the foundation of faith and love of God and neighbour.

They suffered a martyr’s death, together with their seven children (including a child in the mother’s womb), for aiding and sheltering the persecuted Jews on March 24, 1944 in Markowa.

They will be beatified on September 10, 2023 in Markowa, Poland.

If we don't remember,
who will?

On the night of March 23/24, 1944, five gendarmes and four to six navy blue policemen arrived in Markowa. The group was commanded by the head of the gendarmerie in Łańcut, lieutenant Eilert Dieken.

While sleeping three Jews were shot dead and soon the others were shot, too. Józef Ulma and his pregnant wife Wiktoria were led outside the house. Then, having discussed the matter with his subordinates, Dieken also ordered the children to be shot. In a few moments, 17 people were murdered – including the unborn child.
